When it comes to talking about fine wine in South Africa the towns of Stellenbosch, Constantia, Paarl and Franschoek are all names that come to mind.. Just off the beaten track lies Durbanville, a region that was once home to farms owned by the Dutch East India Company, farms that grew mostly grain that literally fueled the Napoleonic wars..
Today this humble little town located 25 minutes out of the city centre, half way between Stellenbosch and Cape town is home to what has become known as "Sauvignon blanc country" as farmers have started swopping grain production for grapes. It is here where small boutique wineries produce world class quality wines that have been winning awards both locally and internationally..
I will collect you at 9am where after we will drive through the lush green vineyards to 4 stunning wineries, each winery with their own distinct character and setting. What makes these wineries so special is that they are mostly family-run, producing smaller batches of wine and are frequented mostly by locals. Don't expect to find rows of tour busses or any touristy gimmicks to win you over, just good quality wine and mostly South African accents interjected by bursts of sporadic laughter by the locals..
Lunch can be enjoyed at any of the wineries, all offering different delicious menus from casual to fine dining..
