History of Tibet
Tibet, often called the “Roof of the World,” has a deep and complex history dating back over 21,000 years. The early Zhang Zhung civilization played a crucial role in shaping Tibetan culture and introduced the Bön religion, influencing Tibetan spirituality before Buddhism.
The Tibetan Empire was established in the 7th century under King Songtsen Gampo, who unified Tibet and introduced Buddhism with the help of his Nepalese and Chinese wives, Princess Bhrikuti and Princess Wencheng. The empire flourished but fragmented in the 9th century due to internal conflicts. Over the centuries, Tibet saw alternating periods of independence and Chinese influence, shaping its unique cultural and religious identity.
Today, Tibet remains a land of deep spiritual significance, home to ancient monasteries, artistic traditions, and a resilient local community. The Tibet Overland Tour is an unparalleled opportunity to explore this fascinating region, its history, and breathtaking landscapes.
